Furman to co-host Democratic debate
Associated Press
GREENVILLE -- Furman University will
co-host the Jan. 29 Democratic presidential debate, the South Carolina
Democratic Party said Wednesday. The party invited the private liberal arts
school to help organize the debate, which will be aired nationally five days
before the state's first-in-the-South presidential primary."NBC Nightly News"
anchor Tom Brokaw is set to moderate the debate at the Peace Center's 2,100-seat
concert hall in downtown Greenville.Party Chairman Joe Erwin had passed over
Furman's campus as the site of the debate because Greenville County does not
honor the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.Erwin said holding the debate at the
university, which is in an unincorporated part of Greenville County, would put
the party in an uncomfortable position. However, the city honors the holiday for
the slain civil rights leader."Having it in Greenville and still be involved is
fine with us," said university spokesman Vince Moore. "It is such an educational
opportunity."
