COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Mark Sanford ordered a new
primary election Tuesday for the state Senate seat Democrat Maggie Glover
holds.
The governor's order for a Sept. 28 primary comes after a federal judge
last week dismissed Glover's lawsuit challenging the state Democratic
Party's decision to ask for new vote because of allegations of fraud.
The results of the June 8 primary showed Tim Norwood in a runoff with
Glover.
However, a recount later that week put Marion County Deputy
Administrator Kent Williams in the runoff with seven more votes than
Norwood. Norwood then appealed the results and brought allegations of
voting fraud to the state party.
The party threw out the results and ordered a new primary with Glover,
Williams and Norwood on the ballot.
Glover and Williams appealed that decision to the state Supreme Court,
which refused to hear the case. Glover then sued in U.S. District Court
and claimed the party's actions would infringe on voters' rights.
That case was dismissed last week.
