PROGRAMMERS IN THIS VALLEY CAN WRITE THEIR OWN SALARIES ENGINEERS COME OUT OF SCHOOL AND CAN START AT 250,000$--- AND A LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING OF TECHNOLOGY STARTS IN THIS VALLEY IN PRESCHOOL WHY AM I PERSONALY FUNDING MOST OF THE COMPUTERS IN DISTRICT TWO CLASSROOMS WHY ISNT THE STATE MAKING IT MANDATORY THAT EVERY SINGLE STUDENT HAVE A COMPUTER IN CLASS? WHY IS THERE STILL RESISTANCE FROM TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO DONT WANT TO BECOME TECH SAVY THEMSELVES AND THEREFORE--"HOLD BACK" THEIR STUDENTS? WHY ISNT THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOCUSED ON CREATING A TECHNOLOGY PROFICIENT WORK FORCE? IVE ALSO SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY TO PROVIDE READING TEACHERS AND READING PROGRAMS IN DISTRICT TWO. I PROVIDED FUNDING FOR SIX READING TEACHERS OVER A SEVEN YEAR PERIOD, WITH THE DISTRICT PICKING UP SOME OF THOSE SALARIES AND CARRYING ON WITH THE READING PROGRAMS. WHY ITS NO SECRET THAT A PERSON WHO CANNOT READ--CANNOT BE FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT AND ULTIMATELY WILL BECOME A DRAIN ON THE STATE WHY IS TECHNOLOGY SUCH A LOW PRIORITY. SOUTH CAROLINA HAS BEEN SHORTSIGHTED IN HISTORY IN TERMS OF PLANNING AHEAD FOR A TRAINED WORKFORCE AND IS PLAYING CATCH UP. MOVING FULL SPEED AHEAD FUNDING TECHNOLOGY IS AKIN TO MAKING SURE A STUDENT CAN READ. PROGRAMMING CAN START IN JUNIOR HIGHSCHOOL----YET WE HAVE JR HIGHS IN DISTRICT TWO WHERE THERE ARE CLASSROOMS WITH LIMITED COMPUTER ACCESS. I AM PROVIDING THE COMPUTERS-- BUT I AM QUICKLY TIRING OF BEING THE MAJOR SUPPORT FOR TECHNOLOGY AND I AM FEELING TAKEN FOR GRANTED IN TERMS OF BEING ASKED FOR MORE AND MORE COMPUTER FUNDING ITS TIME FOR THE STATE TO PUT ASIDE SIGNIFICANT FUNDING AND MANDATORY PLANS FOR EQUIPPING ALL SCHOOLS AND ALL STUDENTS TO ENTER TODAYS WORLD---WHICH IS A TECH WORLD. I WAS ASKED TO JOIN A BOARD FOR THE STATE ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO---DURING A PREVIOUS STATE SUPT OF EDUCATIONS REIGN. I REFUSED FOR TWO REASONS---GIVEN ITS POLITICS AND SUPT. CHANGE WITH GOVERNORS, I FELT I COULD NOT ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING IN A CONSTANTLY CHANGING POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT WITH GOVERNORS COMING AND GOING. I ASKED THAT A TECH BOARD BE ESTABLISHED THAT WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH TECH SUPPORT STATEWIDE. LIVING IN CALIFORNIA WHERE PEOPLE ARE THE SMARTEST ON EARTH I SEE THAT THE DIFFERENCE IS BELIEF IN TECHNOLOGY. I DONT SEE SOUTH CAROLINA AS A STATE THAT BELIEVES IN TECHNOLOGY---AND IS CREATING A WORKFORCE AND INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BUSINESS TO COME TO THE STATE.
