Spring Field Day in Blackville

BLACKVILLE – Small grain growers and beef cattle producers will gather at Clemson University’s Edisto Research and Education Center, May 3, for the annual Spring Field Day. A program for beef producers will begin at 10 a.m. and run to noon, when a barbecue lunch will be served. The small grain program is set for 1-2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. “We’ll visit the Sustainable Ag Production Systems Center to take a look at demonstrations of switch grass, Matua grass and annual ryegrass, get an update on the crop production portion of the project, learn about preconditioning of calves, and finish with development of Angus replacement heifers,” said Larry Olson, Clemson Extension Service beef cattle specialist. “We’ll have some optional tours in the afternoon,” he said. They include a hay equipment demonstration, and visits to the Sustainable Ag Production Systems Center, the cow-calf production project and the Edisto Forage Bull Test. The small grain program will offer a look at variety trials, including some new varieties of triticale, according to Jay Chapin, Clemson Extension entomologist and small grains specialist. “We’ll also view some spring split nitrogen application work, some fungicide tests and some plots where we have controlled aphids to combat barley yellow dwarf virus,” he said. The Edisto REC is three miles west of Blackville. For more information, call Dr. Jay Chapin, 803-284-3343.
