When she refers to welcoming immigrants "regardless of race or religion . . . [j]ust like we have for centuries," she betrays a real ignorance of the country she's talking about. No, Nikki, for decades before your parents immigrated here, the U.S. had strict quotas that kept immigration from everywhere in Asia, including India, to a minimum. For decades before that, Chinese, Japanese, and Indians (denominated "Hindus") were excluded altogether by sharply discriminatory immigration laws going back to the 19th century. While the wisdom of today's relatively open immigration laws can be fairly debated, whatever welcome they extend to non-Europeans is a relatively recent phenomenon and an accomplishment too hard-fought to be passed off as something that's been here "for centuries."
