State Medicaid Overhaul Criticized

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Two new reports criticize South Carolina's plan to overhaul the state's Medicaid plan.

The reports say the proposal would cut services to children, and is based on untested concepts that could unravel the health insurance program for the state's neediest residents.

The reports come nearly two months after the Department of Health and Human Services submitted a proposal to the federal government seeking approval to make major changes to Medicaid. The program serves about 850,000 people.

The agency says the changes are needed to control costs and growth and that children will not lose any services.

More than half those on Medicaid are children.
