Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Residents have helped victims Thumbs up to the Upstate residents who have dug into their pockets to help the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. News reports have detailed everything from lemonade stand sales to a Soby's Restaurant fund-raiser and a HIS Radio WLFJ event that netted $900,000 to help out those whose lives were devastated by the deadly waves. Oakview Elementary School in Simpsonville recently raised $20,000 while other schools held fund-raisers as well. Today, a giant garage sale takes place at the Palmetto Expo Center from 8 a.m. to noon. The project is sponsored by 12 Upstate churches. And a note: the Red Cross said Thursday that the $1.2 billion it has raised is enough to take care of its tsunami relief efforts. 'Choose Death' is tasteless Thumbs Down to Greenville Sen. Mike Fair and Rep. John Graham Altman of Charleston for their childish reactions to the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal this week to hear South Carolina's appeal of a ruling that found the state's "Choose Life" plates unconstitutional. The state must offer the other side of this debate a plate, too. Thumbs Up to Sen. David Thomas of Greenville for sensibly proposing a "Pro Choice" plate, which offers a reasonable solution. The "Choose Abortion" Graham alternative and the "Choose Death" Fair proposal were little more than political cheap shots. Greer helps with heating bills Thumbs Up to Greer residents who responded overwhelmingly to a public plea for donations to help people who can't pay their heating bills. Greer High School students were among people from Greer and outside the city who sent donations totaling $8,300. The Greer Commission of Public Works will match those donations up to $25,000. This is a great show of support for the less fortunate during these cold winter days.
