A look at the base, located 10 miles north of Charleston.


• Host unit: 437th Airlift Wing, an active-duty unit

• Assigned tenants: The 315th Reserve Airlift Wing, 1st Combat Camera Squadron and 373rd Training Squadron

• Of note: The base shares its runways with commercial aviation at Charleston International Airport

• Personnel: 3,100 active-duty, 2,000 reservists and 1,300 civilian personnel

• Aircraft: 48 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo planes

• Real estate: 6,486 acres

• Buildings: 234, not including housing

437th Wing Operations

• The wing has five organizations: operations, maintenance, mission support, medical and staff.

• There are four C-17-flying squadrons -- the 14th; 15th, 16th and 17th. They provide combat-ready air crews for missions that include carrying troops and cargo for airdrops and humanitarian airlifts.
