Bell 5225 Clemson Ave Apt 219 Columbia SC 29206 Belljr@bellsouth.net TRAN Deplorable condition of SC roads & highways, and gas taxes Dear Gov. Haley, I read with dismay the story in The State concerning the closure of one of the two lanes of I-95 N due to "a hole in the bridge over the Great PeeDee River"! Really? The article also mentioned two similar situations occurring recently on I-77 in York & Chester counties. It is not difficult to imagine a situation with serious, if not catastrophic, results due to the disgraceful condition of the roads and highways in SC. Do we wait for such a tragedy before acting? On a personal and solely irritating level, the condition of I-95 and I-26 (2-lanes each direction in SC as opposed to I-95's 3-lanes in GA & FL) was directly responsible for my FL family leaving early this morning to return home after a pre-Christmas visit. Had they waited 'til later in the day to leave, they would almost certainly have encountered painfully long delays (sometimes an hour or more) because of unbelievably congested 2-lane interstates driving S in SC at this time of year. Why, WHY shouldn't we, the drivers (users) of these highways (South Carolinians AND out-of-staters) pay increased gas taxes to help get our highways modernized so they are safer, more efficient, and less destructive to our vehicles? Why, Madam Governor, would we not consider this "user tax" a most logical way to collect additional funding for our infrastructure? Thank you for your diligence on behalf of your constitutes and our state. Sincerely, June R. Bell
