 Governor Denies Clemency for McWee
(Columbia-AP) -- Governor Mark Sanford has refused to stop the execution of an Aiken County man scheduled to go to the death chamber Friday.

Sanford denied Jerry McWee's clemency petition Thursday afternoon.

The governor says he respects the courts and will not overturn a case that was appealed several times.

McWee was convicted of shooting convenience store clerk John Perry twice in the head in July 1991. Prosecutors say he then took $350 from the cash register.

Defense lawyers have said the clemency petition was McWee's last hope for avoiding the death chamber.

McWee is set to die Friday at 6 p.m. at the Capital Punishment Facility at Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia.
