DSS Says Thousands Have Unclaimed Child Support Waiting

It’s a list 5700 people long. The Department of Social Services says they are people they can’t find. For every name there’s an unclaimed child support check waiting to be cashed. So we decided to search for ourselves. With a phone book and an online directory we started calling. There were wrong numbers, answering machines and disconnected lines.

But after just 15 minutes we found Gaffney resident Kimberly Austin. But here’s the odd part.  She still lives at the same address on file with DSS. She had no idea she had money waiting for her. Then we hit the streets and tracked down Teresa Allgood. She’s another person DSS couldn’t find.

So what do you do if your name is on this list? DSS says give them a call. Those numbers are (803) 898-9210 in Columbia or 1-800-768-5858 nationwide. Unclaimed check amounts range from $25 to $5,000 according to DSS.
