South Carolina's military bases contribute $4.3 billion to the state's economy annually, according to a 2001 study by the chambers of commerce in the four cities where most of those bases are located: Columbia, Sumter, Charleston and Beaufort. The estimated annual economic impact of each individual base is:

Fort Jackson, Army, Columbia

$610 million

Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter

$450 million

Charleston Air Force Base, Charleston

$315 million

McEntire Air National Guard Station, Eastover

$217 million

Parris Island, Marine Corps, Beaufort County

$202 million

Beaufort Marine Air Station, Beaufort

$1 billion plus

Other facilities, including the Naval Weapons Station at Goose Creek, the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, and Reserve and National Guard units that do not operate on the listed bases.
