2002 BEST AND WORST CHARITIES IN S.C.
NAMED TO MILES’ SCROOGES AND ANGELS LISTS

Secretary of State Jim Miles kicked off the holiday season today with his annual announcement of the Scrooges and Angels charities for South Carolina. The Secretary of State regulates charities, and Miles has used his designation of South Carolina’s best and worst charities as a means to raise awareness about the importance of checking out a charity when donating to worthwhile causes.

According to Secretary Miles, “Those charities listed as Scrooges are not the only stingy charities operating in our state. However, they are chosen because they illustrate our point that just because a charity’s name sounds good, it does not mean it does good work. We all respect and admire firemen, we love children, and we care about the sick. Many charities contain these words, which pull at our heartstrings, yet they give a miniscule amount of the donations their organizations receive to the cause they claim to serve. On the other hand, there are many excellent, worthwhile charities operating in our state, whose names may be very similar to other charities. Which charities deserve your hard-earned dollar? To know for sure, you really need to check it out.”

The annual Scrooges List is based on the charitable organization’s failure to spend a decent percentage of their expenditures on actual programs, their high use of paid (professional) fundraisers, and their presence in our state. Some of these charities are physically located within our state’s borders, and some are headquartered in other states. However, they are all soliciting donations from South Carolinians.
