Ready to get that
tattoo here in S.C.? Not so fast
HEALTH
COLUMBIA - Tattoo artists are ready to
make their mark in South Carolina now that Gov. Mark Sanford has
signed a bill to make the industry legal. However, it could take
several months before tattoos can be offered to the public because
the state must approve health rules. The state Department of Health
and Environmental Control must draft regulations, get approval from
its governing board, hold public hearings and send the new rules to
the legislature, which returns in January.
The law requires tattoo artists to use disposable needles and get
a parent's permission for anyone 18 to 21. It bans tattooing the
face, neck and head. Minors cannot get a tattoo in South
Carolina.

Pills to be distributed to those near
nuclear plant
HEALTH
COLUMBIA -- Midlands residents who live near the V.C. Summer
Nuclear Station can receive potassium iodide pills that could
protect them in case of an accident.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control will
distribute the pills on June 26 to those who live within 10 miles of
the station.
Potassium iodide can help block the buildup of radioactive iodine
in the thyroid and reduce the risk of cancer.
The agency also distributed potassium iodide pills to residents
in Pickens and Oconee counties in July 2003 and York County
residents in May 2003. -- ASSOCIATED PRESS |
