To answer this let's be fair, the city of Hilton Head Island, and the appropriate state department affiliated with public health has indicated that the water that the city provides us is safe, and has been tested....at the well site! The city has also published several announcements that water lines and sewer lines throughout the island may have been damaged! This means that while the water being stored by the city is fine, the water coming out of your tap may not be! Ok, first my background....I have a degree in Microbiology, in addition I spent 37 years at the Minnesota Department of Health, about 25 of those years in the Laboratories. Scientific curiosity often motivates me. In this case I was concerned about the water my family uses daily, both the water coming out of my tap, and the water being used by many of the places on the island where the public may be using the water without even knowing. So, I purchased an in-home test kit to look at possible water contamination coming from my own tap. I performed the tests as indicated in that test kit. The TESTS FOR POSSIBLE SEWAGE CONTAMINATION WERE POSITIVE! THAT MEANS THAT THE WATER COMING OUT OF MY TAP IS NOT SAFE TO DRINK! The tests I performed (coliform testing) indicates that our drinking water is exposed to sewage before coming out of our taps.
