(Columbia) Feb. 3, 2004 - John Kerry says he's "stunned" to have won Missouri, Arizona, North Dakota, Delaware and New Mexico. The race in Oklahoma is still too close to call, with Kerry slightly behind retired General Wesley Clark and Senator John Edward.
Kerry supporters celebrated at Jake's Bar and Grill in Five Points. James Smith is pleased with Kerry's second place finish in the Palmetto State, "Just three weeks ago, just three weeks ago, he was polling at 1% in South Carolina and he leaves tonight with a lot of support, friends and more specifically delegates."
Rep. James Clyburn announced his support of Kerry after Dick Gephardt dropped out, "So a second place finish sets up a two-man contest and that's good for us."
Smith is now looking to the future and he says it should include a Kerry-Edwards ticket, "I think it would be nice and important to have someone from the South, particularly Senator Edwards that would be strong."
Clyburn also considers that a strong ticket to run against President Bush, "A midwesterner on the ticket or a southerner would be pleasing to me."
The Kerry campaign also points out that in South Carolina, Edwards outspent Kerry in television ads almost five to one.
