The three of us are shooting sports enthusiests, so naturally, they wanted to go shooting. Prior to their arrival, I started looking for outdoor shooting ranges near the Charleston area. Much to my dismay, I could not find one, single outdoor range in close proximity to Charleston! The nearest outdoor range was more than an hour and a half away, close to Lake Moultrie! I told my friends that I was going to start writing to you to encourage you to work with our DNR to establish more outdoor ranges throughout Charleston and Berkley Counties. Therefore, please consider this email to be my first of many more to come. I know that you are a great supporter of our 2nd Amendment rights, so I am confident that you will empathize with my concerns. I own and shoot a variety of antique and more contemporary WWII era firearms. Some are black powder. This presents a unique problem as many ranges do not permit the shooting of black powder firearms. I have to assume that this is a problem due to the wadding and patches that are expelled from the black powder firearms and wind up as "litter" on the ground. However, at the range I recently visited(which does not allow black powder), it was obvious that the DNR clean-up crews had not visited that range recently as the ground was a "carpet" of spent brass! As is a normal practice of mine, I did collect my spent brass so that I did not contribute to the problem. So then why are black powder firearms restricted? I do not understand! South Carolina is a state of great traditions. Firearms are part of those traditions. These traditions are more than worthy of political support as well as the support of out citizens, at state and federal level! So Governor, please tell me what I can personally do to convince yourself and the DNR to allocate funds to build more outdoor ranges in South Carolina, especially within Charleston and Berkley Counties and to lift the restrictions on black powder firearms at our outdoor ranges. I realize that the 2nd Amendment is viciously under attack by our Democrat friends and some Republicans and these politicians attempt to avoid any considerations involving it. I do not believe that you are among that misguided group. I have heard your public statements in support of the 2nd Amendment and that is why I am contacting you. I believe that you will listen. I am greatly looking forward to your personal reply, as I hope that you do not hand this off to an aide to respond. I only say this because that has been my experience with my local representatives over the years. Most respectfully, Richard "Dick" Varner 73.104.49.34
