(Aiken-AP) Oct. 28, 2003 - A Columbia newspaper
reports former Senator Strom Thurmond left an
estate initially estimated at $200,000.
The State newspaper says Thurmond gave most of the
estate to family members, former aides and favorite
institutions.
Columbia attorney and certified public accountant Jim
Jones is handling the estate. He says the value of
the assets might increase after an inventory.
The newspaper reports the nine-page will was filed at
the Aiken County courthouse on Monday.
Thurmond left his largest cash bequest of $50,000 to
his daughter, Julie Thurmond Whitmer, of Washington, DC.
The will gives Thurmond's Social Security and his
retirement benefits from the US Senate, US Army and
state of South Carolina to his estranged widow, Nancy
Moore Thurmond.
The politician perhaps most associated with South
Carolina died June 26th. He was 100-years-old. Thurmond
was the nation's oldest serving senator, serving for 48
years from 1954 until 2001.
