COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A measure ending the requirement to use minibottles in bars has been approved by a House committee.

The Ways and Means Committee approved a proposal Wednesday identical to one that is awaiting action in the Senate.

South Carolina is the only state that requires bars to use the 1.7-ounce bottles, said Rep. Bill Cotty, R-Columbia.

"We believe this would be good for business, and it's fair," Cotty said.

"I like the way it is now," said Rep. Herb Kirsh, D-Clover. Kirsh said the system works well and doesn't need changing.

The measure now goes to the House floor, but Cotty said supporters intend to wait until the Senate proposals arrive.

The Senate is waiting until it finishes the state budget.
