Marketing the capital city

Columbia, after dismissing "A Capital Place to Be" for the second time, has started a search for a replacement slogan as part of a new marketing campaign.

The current slogan was first dumped five years ago for "It's Happening Now!" -- a line that wasn't happening when it was dropped a year later, prompting the return of "A Capital Place to Be" from retirement. Presumably, that will be its only comeback.

Or will it? The city is asking the public to vote on these three finalists -- "New Southern Spirit," "The Big Friendly" and "Now This is Living!" -- via online survey or mail-in ballots to City Hall through Jan. 15. The State newspaper reported Thursday that "a clear winner" would earn City Council's approval.

But no clear winner had emerged as of 6 p.m. Friday, unless you count the majority vote then going to "none of the above."

Ever cognizant of our city's reputation for impeccable manners, we Charlestonians are reluctant to meddle in Columbia's business. Yet as residents of a community known far and wide as the Holy City, we suggest that Columbians not force the slogan issue. Instead, simply wait for nickname nature to take its course.

Anyway, in our lucky case, we find that "Charleston" alone generally suffices to impress would-be visitors.
