Legislators says boycott should be called to force chief's removal

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Charleston state senator says a boycott of the city's tourism industry should be used to force Police Chief Reuben Greenberg to step down.

Earlier this month, Greenberg provoked outcries when he said during an interview with The Post and Courier of Charleston that he wouldn't take responsibility "every time one black son of a bitch kills another. I have no control over that. There are social factors much more powerful than anything we can concoct in the Charleston Police Department."

Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, said Greenberg's home and that of Charleston Mayor Joe Riley should be picketed.

The Rev. Joe Darby, the state NAACP's vice president, said his group is considering a boycott. The civil rights group has an ongoing boycott in place over the Confederate flag flying on the Statehouse grounds.
