(Columbia) - A Georgetown County woman has been named South Carolina's "Mother of the Year."

77-year-old Maggie Deas of Plantersville received the award during a special ceremony at the Governor's Office Wednesday afternoon.

Deas raised nine children while working as a housekeeper in the Grand Strand area. And her family and friends say she is also known for her many years of selfless service to her community and church.

The South Carolina "Mother of the Year" is chosen by a search committee from nominees submitted from across the state.

The honor has been given since 1942.
