Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund May banquets benefit DNR
The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, Inc. will host two fundraising banquets in the Upstate May 10th and May 11th, 2012. The 8th annual Tri-County Wildlife Conservation Banquet will be held from 6-11 p.m. Thursday, May 10th in the Anne Springs Close Greenway Dairy Barn located on 250 Dairy Barn Lane, just off Old Nations Ford Road near Ft. Mill. The 27th annual Spartanburg Harry Hampton Conservation Banquet will be held from 6-11 p.m. at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in downtown Spartanburg. Tickets are $25 each and $40 per couple.
Both banquets benefit the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and consist of live and silent auctions, prizes, great food and more. For 2012, the Hampton Fund donation to DNR was $104,050, bringing the total donated over the years to $2,731,080. A portion of the funds raised benefit local wildlife and conservation projects in the communities and the balance goes to help fund the annual DNR donation.
The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation which partners with the DNR for the promotion of natural resources and natural resource education which benefits the conservation of wildlife, marine and other resources in South Carolina. Funds are obtained solely through private donations and special promotional projects, fundraising events and publications. Although some of the funds are donated to special projects run by the DNR, they are not used to replace any department programs already supported by appropriated money.
"The Harry Hampton Fund and DNR have been natural resources partners here in the Palmetto State since 1982," said Hampton board chairman Frank Sistare of Spartanburg. "Our natural resources need our stewardship, not just for us today, but for future generations of South Carolinians." "The Hampton Fund is remains very cognizant of the acute budget crisis facing DNR, and we are grateful to all who’ve supported our fundraising efforts," said the Fund’s executive director Jim Goller of Beaufort and a DNR retiree.
Public education in the principles of wildlife and marine resources management and conservation is a major thrust of the fund’s purpose. Four scholarships are annually awarded to South Carolina resident students to attend a South Carolina institution of higher learning. Two are awarded to students majoring in wildlife, fisheries, forestry, biology, zoology, marine science, environmental science or a related field, one is awarded annually in the field of law enforcement/criminal justice and one annually in the field of journalism.
