COLUMBIA, S.C. - A bill that would extend the
terms of House members from two to four years and senators from four
to six years is among more than 130 bills prefiled Wednesday by
lawmakers.
The joint resolution, sponsored by Rep. Michael Pitts, R-Laurens,
seeks a constitutional amendment to make the changes beginning in
2008.
Last week, House and Senate members prefiled 225 measures for the
legislative session that begins Jan. 11. House members also may file
Dec. 22.
Bills filed in both the Senate and the House seek to define a
valid marriage as one between a man and a woman. Other bills in the
Senate will again deal with judicial reform and the restructuring of
state agencies.
Some other House bills include proposals on driver's license
restrictions for minors less than 18 years old who are not enrolled
in school or have not graduated from school, and a proposal to
create the South Carolina Education and Economic Development Act
that provides for the development of a curriculum organized around a
career cluster
system. |
