Many who knew him as a young boy remember John Drummond hunting rabbits in the woods.
Since those childhood days, and through much of his adult life, state Sen. Drummond has been an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoors enthusiast.
The Ninety Six native was honored Friday at a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources board meeting because he also has been a constant proponent for the state’s environment and its natural resources.
“I was not only surprised, I’m so thankful that they would honor me with this award,” Drummond said.
Drummond was the first recipient of the John W. Drummond Conservationist Award presented by the DNR board.
“It’s not an annual award, but when we see an individual or organization who is deserving we’ll present it to them,” said DNR Chairman Michael McShane.
McShane said that in the future the award could be given each year or every so many years to one or more individuals.
DNR has dedicated itself to recognizing the dedication of individuals like Drummond who has worked for the protection and conservation of the state’s natural resources.
Soon after joining the Senate, he was assigned to serve as a member of the Senate Fish, Game and Forestry Committee.
In 1988, he was appointed to serve as that committee’s representative on the Wildlife and Marine Resources Commission and served there until 1991.
In 1989, Drummond became chairman of the Senate Fish, Game and Forestry Committee and served until 1992.
He chaired the Joint Legislative Committee on Aquaculture that resulted in the 1989 Strategic Plan for Aquaculture Development.
Drummond was also instrumental in the passage of the State Duck Stamp Act with a portion of the funds from the initiative going to protect waterfowl habitat in South Carolina and Canada.
“I hope that I will see in my lifetime others receive this award,” Drummond said.
