COLUMBIA--A resolution to rename Earle Morris Highway after its namesake was convicted of securities fraud has passed the South Carolina House, but it may face a tougher challenge in the Senate, lawmakers say.

A joint resolution to rename the road that runs through Anderson and Pickens counties to S.C. Highway 153 passed the House on a voice vote Tuesday.

Thousands of people, many in the Upstate, lost millions when Morris' Carolina Investors failed.

The road was named for Morris, a former state lawmaker, lieutenant governor and comptroller general, nearly 30 years ago.
