Governor Vetoes 146 Budget Items
$95 Million Worth Of Items Vetoed
COLUMBIA --
Gov. Mark Sanford issued 149 vetoes of items in the state's $5.8
billion budget Tuesday, totalling just over $95 million.
Sanford said the vetoes are about doing first things first.
The governor said the state should pay back trust funds before the
state begins new and additional spending. He said the vetoes reflect an
attempt to meet in the middle and replenish trust funds.
"Given that just $2.5 million out of the $707 million in new money
coming into state government this year is going toward tax relief, we
think there's a lot of room to repay money borrowed from trust and reserve
funds," Sanford said in a news release.
Trust funds are intended to cover future expenses or problems. The
Legislature decides when to repay trust funds.
The budget that cleared the House and Senate covered all cash
borrowed from the state's rainy day reserve accounts. It also restored $35
million taken from trust accounts as the state looked for money to avoid
shutting down agencies and programs as the economy recovered from the last
recession.
Last year, the state House overturned all but two of 106 vetoes.
It's unknown how the General Assembly will react to Sanford's vetoes this
year.
