District 24 has a new representative to the South Carolina House, but it's the same party in charge.

Republican Bruce Bannister won the special election to replace David Wilkins. Bannister claimed 57% of the vote in defeating Democrat Michelle Shain.

Bannister recieved 3,232 votes to Shain's 2,366 votes. The Greenville County Election Commission says turnout was 24 percent.

Bannister told The Greenville News he won because "Republican values are shared by more people in this district than the Democrats and grassroots, person-to-person campaigning."

The District 24 seat opened when Wilkins accepted President Bush's offer to become U.S. ambassador to Canada.
