Lottery funds helping local schools

By TASHA STEIMER
Index-Journal staff writer

Local school districts are using state lottery funds to increase staff, update materials and support various programs for students this year.
Janell Alston, director of elementary education, said Greenwood School District 50 received $688,600 for kindergarten through fifth-grade students for the 2004-05 school year.
“We were able to add three more literacy coaches,” she said. “Now we have at least one part-time coach at each (elementary) school.”
Alston said the funds also provided two English as a Second Language teachers and support for an additional kindergarten class at East End Elementary. Two part-time “push-in” teachers – tutors or mentors who travel between schools and work with students in small groups – were also hired.
Alston said other funds will be used to pay for additional staff development in the literacy program, and some is set aside to support summer programs that could include mini-learning camps for students.
“All elementary students will benefit from these funds,” she said.

Cavaliers return

Football back at Long Cane, but for just 1 season

By RON COX
Index-Journal sports writer

McCORMICK — Eight-man football is back in Greenwood and the Lakelands area.
After a year off because of a lack of numbers, the Long Cane Academy football team returned to action Thursday night at home with its season-opening game against Laurens Academy.
“I love it,” Cavaliers coach Freddy Carter said. “The kids are ready. Last year we didn’t have but one senior. We really didn’t have enough to play.
“It hurt. It crushed us. But in a way, it gave them the whole year to hit the weights and get ready for this year.”
But those feelings might could come back again in 2005, when numbers go down again next year.
Still, Long Cane headmaster and athletic director Dr. Ernest Stokes said it was good to see the red uniforms on the field again.
“I’m glad to have it back,” Stokes said. “It’s important to the community, the faculty, the students and the coaches.
