Sanford Dealing With Stack Of Pending Bills

Some To Be Signed; Others Face Veto

Gov. Mark Sanford's office said he will sign a tougher criminal domestic violence bill Tuesday.

The law would take effect Jan. 1 and double the minimum fine for a first conviction of domestic violence to $1,000. Offenders can also get 30 days in jail.

A second conviction could bring a year in jail and $5,000 in fines.

The Legislature left a mountain of 62 bills on the governor's desk last week that Sanford must deal with by midnight Tuesday.

The governor is expected to veto some, including a tougher seat belt bill that Sanford says is too weak.

Sanford's office said he signed 16 of the bills on Friday including ones that give sweeter incentives for companies to use state port facilities, create new penalties for defacing or illegally removing campaign signs and create a low-cost version of a living will -- all of which took effect immediately.

The Legislature is expected to reconvene later this month to deal with any vetoes.
