When you or a loved one goes into a healthcare facility when you're sick, you expect to get better-right? But did you know that each year, approximately 1 in 25 people in the U.S. get infections in hospitals while being treated for something else? Unfortunately, nearly 75,000 people in hospitals die each year with these infections-many of which could have been prevented with proper infection prevention practices. Everyone plays a role in infection prevention-patients, families, and healthcare personnel. You play an important role in infection prevention-in and out of healthcare facilities. The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology is a professional organization dedicated to reducing or eliminating these often times fatal outcomes. Our theme for 2015 is "Spread the Word, Not Germs". We strive to educate healthcare workers, patients, and the public the importance of hand hygiene. It is our life work. While we dedicate our careers each day to mitigate or eliminate the risks associated with healthcare acquired infections, we ask that our government recognize our mission during this week. HAI's can impact anyone and have life altering consequences. Many of these infections are avoidable. APIC's mission is to educate and promote patient safety and quality. Our work has raised the bar in how patients are managed while in the hospital. We would be honored to have SC join us by recognizing this week on our behalf.
