Haley, Please open an investigation regarding the government officials who shot and killed 14 cats taken from the Marion County Animal Shelter. In addition, such an investigation should also consider whether additional stray or shelter cats and dogs have been shot and killed. I am actively involved in ASPCA animal rescue related activities in New York City and I am appalled to learn that such cruel and inhumane actions have been taken by South Carolina government officials. Such actions are contrary to current norms and standards of care and euthanasia for stray and shelter animals, and individuals who abuse domestic animals should be prosecuted and punished. For years now, studies have shown that people who are cruel and abusive to animals are also cruel and abusive toward other people such as children, the elderly, and spouses. In the Marion County situation, the stakes are equally high as abuse toward animals might also link to abusive behavior by government officials against citizens, including police abuse and misconduct. Below are links to articles that discuss the predictive connection between animal cruelty and cruelty against humans. 1) The Link: Cruelty to Animals and Violence Towards People (Michigan State University College of Law) https://www.animallaw.info/article/link-cruelty-animals-and-violence-towards-people 2)Animal Cruelty and Human Violence (Humane Society of the United States) http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/qa/cruelty_violence_connection_faq.html Please be a leader on this case: bring the animal abusing government officials to justice, and protect other cats and dogs from such abuse. Thank you. Sincerely, Wendy Cortes, Esq.
