I am seeking your assistance in an exigent matter concerning Dorchester County Property Tax. I received a Property Tax Bill on 10 November, 2015 for my home at 8759 Evangeline Drive, N. Charleston, Dorchester County for Tax Year 2015 in the amount of 7298.62. Tax for 2014 was 2645.45. This home is a rental due to short notice receipt of PCS orders to Washington D.C. and our inability to sell it. After maintaining 2 residences in separate states, renting this property was the only option to keep my family together. I received orders back to Charleston SC in July 2104 and was forced to find a new home due to having already rented our Evangeline Dr. home. In spite of being encumbered by setting up another new home, enrolling children in school and starting a new position at the USCG Maritime Law Enforcement Academy, I was able to make an inquiry to the Dorchester County Tax Office in the Sep-Oct 2014 time frame where I was told by a worker that I was "good to go" for 2 years. We are currently exploring the sale of this property when the renters vacate, but we are financially unable to pay an exorbitant Tax bill levied against our property because of the hefty sum. We would certainly choose to have this home sold because we continue to lose money on it monthly causing an additional financial burden. When my wife contacted the Summerville tax office today she was told "there is nothing that can be done". My family and I have been caught in this undesirable situation through a series of circumstances (including multiple military PCS transfers) and miscommunications and believe that a 5000.00 penalty is unmerited based on the information I received in good faith. We certainly would have completed any and all requirements to ensure we were doing the right thing right provided correct information. Receiving this notice one day prior to Veteran's Day was shocking and the amount is disheartening. I am seeking any and all assistance in a way forward in dealing with this matter that will alleviate this burden and reduce an already overwhelming set of financial circumstances for me and my family.
