Forecast: Katrina's local impact

From staff reports

Katrina should arrive in the inland Carolinas by Tuesday morning, but forecasters don't expect it to bring heavy rainfall.

After crossing Florida as a weak hurricane Thursday, Katrina was expected to regain strength in the Gulf of Mexico and hit the Florida Panhandle this weekend, said Tim Armstrong, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

From there the storm will track northeast and drop rain in Georgia and the inland Carolinas by early next week.

"Scattered showers and storms on Monday and Tuesday will be related to Katrina," he said.

The storm will move faster when it hits the Carolinas, Anderson said. "It doesn't look like it's going to stall; it looks like it's going to be moving faster all the time."

The weather service is keep ing a watch for tornadoes spinning from the storm, he said.

"That is a situation we'll have to closely monitor."
