2001 Writing Awards Schedule and Procedures

1.        Compositions should be completed at each school by Friday, November 30, 2001.  It is recommended that students have at least 60 minutes for writing a draft copy and 60 minutes for writing a final copy.  Teachers should manage activities so that students have the opportunity to draft, reflect, edit and copy their work during class.  This process may take several days to fully complete.

2.        Each participating teacher selects the top three compositions in his/her class.  The top three essays, designated as class winners, should be submitted for judging at the school level to determine a school winner.  From that point, the school winner's essay should be submitted to the district coordinator for the selection of a district winner.

3.        Essays should be submitted anonymously for judging.  Please make sure at each level of judging, the student's name appears on the back page of the essay on the lower left side.

4.        Judging at the district level should be completed by Friday, December 14, 2001.

5.        All class, school, and district winners' names, along with appropriate paperwork, should be returned to the Lt. Governor's Office by Friday, January 4, 2002.

6.        The awards ceremony for the district winners will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in Columbia, South Carolina.

7.        In the next few weeks, district coordinators will be notified of the Lt. Governor's Young Writers' Workshop date.
