California just passed legislation that ensure California's medicaid program covers all licensed midwives. Midwives who have undergone the exact same training process required of CPMs in South Carolina. In our state, medicaid requires a midwife have a specific physician on call 24/7 and available for backup in order to be paid by medicaid. A stipulation that isn't even required in the regulations that govern the midwives. This, and other newly presented legislation are attempts to remove midwives from South Carolina, not only limiting the reproductive and humane rights of women, but forcing women to use more costly alternatives that have not been shown to be safer or more effective for low risk mothers and babies. Please, end the harassment of midwives and birth centers in South Carolina. As a women and a veteran of the United States, I deserve to make the choice of where and how my children are born. Very Respectfully, Stephanie Dasher
