Artists and Farmers Celebrate Farm-City Week

(Columbia, SC)---Les Tindal, Commissioner of Agriculture, will announce the artists who have contributed works for the Art and Agriculture Watercolor Collection at a premier, reception, and artists’ signing in the SCDA Conference Center at the entrance of the Columbia State Farmers Market across from Williams-Brice Stadium on Monday, November 20, 2000, at 5:30 PM.

This is the fourth and final year of the Art and Agriculture Watercolor Collection project, which was the brainchild of Toni Elkins, Coordinator of the effort. The project was developed to increase awareness for agriculture and the visual arts and to augment the efforts of the Friends of Agriculture.

The paintings in the collection were used in developing an Art and Agriculture Watercolor Collection Calendar. A portion of the proceeds from the calendar goes to the SC Future Farmers of America Association for agricultural curriculum development or scholarships. And, a portion of the funds will support the effort already underway by the Friends of Agriculture to promote agriculture and agribusiness in the state as a vital industry to the economy and to the health and welfare of our citizens.

The 2001 Calendar artists are Jackie Brantley - Columbia -  803-787-3968; Kathy Caudill - Rock Hill - 803-981-5273; Marsha Dargan - Darlington - 843-395-1425; Donna Gore - Columbia - 803-781-3827; Phillip Morris - Orangeburg - 803-531-4318; May Reisz - Columbia - 803-735-0434; Margerie Ross - Columbia - 803-798-7774; Barbara St. Denis - Easley - 864-855-2570; Tom Thompson - Columbia - 803-781-5022; Betsy Thorne - Columbia - 803-787-2223; Juanita Yancey - Columbia - 803-772-9618; and Barbara Yon - Ridge Spring - 803-685-5386.

Because of the contributions of these and all of the other artists involved in the Art and Agriculture Watercolor project, the collection now includes 49 paintings depicting SC agriculture.  From this unusual combination of agriculture and art, people are learning that there is "culture in agriculture."

W. Lee Flowers Inc. and IGA are providing the best of agriculture---the food on the table---in a "Taste of Agriculture" for the premier reception. The 2001 Calendar sponsors are the SC Cattlemen's Association and the SC Beef Board.

Calendars may be purchased by calling Jim Scott, SC FFA Executive Director, at 803-788-5700, ext. 33, for the nearest SC FFA chapter or by calling Brian Bolt, SC Cattlemen's Association Executive Director, at 877-859-9121 for the nearest cattleman.  To order by mail, send a check for $10 for each calendar to Friends of Agriculture, % SC Department of Agriculture, PO Box 11280, Columbia, SC 29211.
