BMW gives state park $100,000 for education, visitors
center
GREENVILLE, S.C.
-- A $100,000 gift from BMW Manufacturing will fund the
renovation of 66-year-old building into a science education
and visitors' center at Paris Mountain State Park north of
Greenville.
BMW, the German automaker that has a plant in Greer, gave
the money to the state Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Department to renovate the building now used in summer as a
bathhouse for swimmers. The company made the donation
Thursday, the first day of the two-day Governor's Conference
on Tourism and Travel.
Paris Mountain had raised about half of the $200,000 needed
to renovate the building, said park manager Ty Houck.
Construction should begin this year, he said.
"The idea of having a facility where kids would learn about
the environment and go out in boots and wade in streams
sounded like a good opportunity," said BMW spokesman Robert
Hitt. "We are strong on education and hands-on learning."
The
gift will help pay for microscopes at the center where
elementary students can examine insects from park streams or
forests. The building will double as a visitors' center.
