As a retired naval officer and veteran of two wars I take offense every time I see it. It belongs in a museum along with other hateful symbols such as the Swastika flag of Germany and the Rising Sun flag of Imperial Japan. These two nations do not now allow the display of such hateful images. Prior to military service I lived in, and was educated in, a JIm Crow state. We all knew the flag was a symbol of revanchist revisionism and a sign of rampart and overt racism. It has come to signify defiance of the civil rights movement and it is no coincidence that shooter Roof emblazoned his car with the flag. Flying the flag in a public memorial is tatamout to Germany flying the Nazi flag ov er a public memorial to the SS, or Japan flying the Rising Sun over a memorial to flyers who attacked Pearl Harbor. I know that a hateful resolution of the legislature ties your han ds on this matter but the law does allow you to shut down the monument for maintenance and repair. Shut it down and neglect to start it up again until the end of your term
