Joint Research Initiatives Psychologists from the University of South Carolina and the University of Queensland are collaborating on a project that will help improve parenting skills in the general population. Dr. Ron Prinz, Carolina Distinguished Professor in Psychology at USC, has been awarded a five-year $7.5 (US) million grant by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to promote positive parenting techniques to those who have children age 6 and younger. His partner in this important scientific work is Dr. Matt Sanders, Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Through the project, those that come in frequent contact with parents, such as doctors and day-care workers, will be coached on how to teach parents effective parenting habits. While many parenting programs are stigmatized because they target only parents whose children have gotten into trouble, this program is designed to help parents before trouble occurs. The grant also will pay for a media campaign informing people where to seek parenting help. Overall, this project is studying state-of-the-art strategies for population-based dissemination of effective programs for parents.
