Then, I discover that we're footing over 28% of their budget, and I begin to wonder, "Why?" In looking at matters a bit closer, I discover the five permanent members of the Security Council, all of whom have veto power over resolutions, all pay significantly less than the USA. Looking at their contributions, China with an economy almost as large as ours coughs up all of 6.6%, not one-fourth of what we do. France contributes 7.2%, while the UK kicks in almost 6.7%, with Russia benevolently offering up less than 3.2%! So, add them up, friends, and you'll see that we bear more of the UN budget than the rest of the permanent members of the Security Council combined!!! That, to me, is outrageous. If it were up to me, I'd add up the contributions of these five and divide by five, thereby each one being obliged to support the budget by about 10.3%. To me, that sounds fair, because as the old saying goes, "If you want to run with the big dogs, you gotta get off the porch!" Reducing our proportion to this level would immediately save us about $500 MM annually! And, it would send the message that if you are to be peers on the Security Council, be prepared to pay your share! I would ask that you and the President Elect consider this thought. Thank you.
