Nearly 40,000 infants in the United States are affected each year. I am the mother of a two year old daughter with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect that involves four anatomical abnormalities of the heart. Honestly, our family did not know much about congenital heart defects until having to face the fact that my first-born child would be born with one. After two open-heart surgeries to repair my daughter's heart, we are still learning and praying. I am also fortunate to have found a volunteer support group, Upstate Heart Moms, consisting of moms of children who are born with complex heart defects. This group of moms meets on a monthly basis to share experiences, encourage and pray for each other. As a heart mom and a Registered Nurse, I was glad that in 2013 South Carolina joined a number of other states in passing a law requiring hospitals to conduct pulse oximetry, or another approved screening, to detect congenital heart defects on newborns. Additionally, I was so honored to be notified that my request to issue a proclamation recognizing Congenital Heart Disease Awareness week had been granted in 2013 - 2016. As we begin 2017, I would like to see South Carolina participate in recognizing individuals born with congenital heart defects and to honor the dedicated health care professionals who work with us again. This is an ongoing journey "heart families" continue from year to year, and I would be grateful if you would issue another proclamation recognizing the week of February 7 - 14, 2017, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week and February 14, 2017, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day. Thank you for your time and consideration. Respectfully, Courtney B. Cable
