Governor Mark Sanford has riled some
legislators by rejecting bills that he says are special local
legislation that goes against the state
constitution.
Sanford has vetoed legislation that
deals with election commissioners and school days missed
because of bad weather.
Sanford says legislators
should deal with some of the issues in statewide legislation
by giving school boards and local governments more
autonomy.
But some legislators say the governor
has let several bills that deal with local issues become law
since he took office in January.
For example,
Sanford signed bills allowing later school board elections in
Laurens County and a sales tax referendum in Darlington
County.
Charleston Representative John Graham
Altman, a Republican, says the vetoes don't make any
sense. Sanford's spokesman Will Folks says not every
piece of local legislation in so clearly unconstitutional as
to warrant a veto.
