SPIRALING

Insurance drains lifetime of hard
work
By Mary R. Loveless
I own a condo in Sweetwater, Murrells Inlet. This increase in
insurance has taken a toll on my life. I live on a limited income,
but I am paying the homeowners association $175 plus $300 each month
to live here. This is a much as my mortgage payment.
I have worked since I was 15 years old. My last employer was The
Army & Air Force Exchange Service. I worked there 27 years, 20
of them as a retail manager, traveling all over the U.S. I went
where I was needed. I have moved 11 times in 20 years (this includes
four remote assignments). I have put in many long hours and very
long days taking care of the military men and women who serve our
country.
When I retired in 1999, I was totally worn out and looking
forward to many great days here in the Myrtle Beach area. If this
insurance problem is not fixed, I may have to give up my home and
move into a trailer or live with my daughter. I am not ready to do
that. I have worked too hard and too long.
I am not alone in this. We have over 42 condos for sale. Please
do something! The people who insured us for September '06 to August
'07 have made a million dollars profit off us. You said the
hurricane in New Orleans and Florida had nothing to do with this
increase. That is a big one to swallow.
My friend Nancy Parker lives here also. She is the widow of an
Army officer who served this country until he died. She also lost a
son in Iraq. Before this insurance we were able to go out to dinner
occasionally and travel. Now we both sit home and pinch pennies,
wondering where our next money will come from. We are just two
retirees. There are many more widows/retirees here in the same
shape.
We voted you into office and you promised you would do something.
Was this just a political promise? We're still waiting while you
dangle us out in this wind pool of yours.
The writer lives in Murrells
Inlet.
