I was injured in the line of duty, as a Paramedic at Williamston EMS, on 10-18-14. I was taken out of work and worked a total of 36 hours in 2015. I made a GRAND TOTAL of $999.00 in 2015. Unbeknownst to me, until a month after, my primary employer went bankrupt in June of 2015. I was released from Workers Comp, after an inordinate amount of time, C5-6&6-7 spinal fusion and without taxable income in 2015. I have applied for Unemployment Benefits so that I may return to school, as my surgeon advised no more EMS. I have been in Public Service in SC for 25+ years, serving the residents of SC. When I called to inquire the reason that my claim was denied, I was informed that I had not met the required income for the number of previous quarters. I was, however, receiving regular pay from WC. As I complained, YOUR employee told me that I should apply for disability! Really? I am displaced, willing and able to work in another field, and they had the audacity to tell me to apply for disability! There has to be an overhaul in that office! I cannot help that I was injured, displaced and willing to work. I was treated as a common thief today. That is completely inexcusable! I simply need income, while taking classes to change careers. I don't need, or want, disability. That is what is wrong with society today. People abuse the system, I refuse to. Your Great Day In SC program, is a misnomer. You, as a leader, have failed me, my family, my community and our state, if this is the normal response. I prefer to disbelieve that, as I campaigned and voted for you. I liked your policies and stand on various topics. Was I wrong to believe in you? I surely hope not. I, as a father, a Christian, a husband and a voter, have been let down by policy, beaurocrasy and technicalities. I make no bones about it, I want to to work, pay my bills and not leech off of the taxpayers. What am I being treated as less than a professional? I have worked hard to maintain an 800+ beacon, I pay my bills and try to show my girls that being lazy and not pulling their weight is wrong, yet the people that are tasked to assist us try to make us apply for an unneeded service? I was deeply insulted, hurt and angered that Our State encouraged me to lie about having a disability, rather than providing short term assistance, to allow me to regain my footing and be a productive member of society. Please contact me. I am sincerely concerned about the state of our state, my families future and the lack of sincerity and tact that was used today. Sincerely, BS Hudson, Jr.
