South Carolina is close to a settlement with MCI Inc., which state officials say owed back taxes when the company operated as WorldCom Inc., according to S.C. Department of Revenue Director Burnet R. Maybank III.

"We're very close to a civil resolution," Maybank told The Greenville News.

MCI officials Wednesday would not discuss details of the company's negotiations with South Carolina officials.

"We're continuing to negotiate with the states," said MCI spokeswoman Stefanie Scott. She had no additional comment.

Without specifying an amount, Maybank said any sum MCI would pay South Carolina "would be vastly lower" than Mississippi, which the company recently agreed to pay $100 million to settle back tax claims.
