I am frustrated by over half of the State Governors in our country firmly rejecting the millions of war ravaged innocent Syrian citizens that desperately need a place to go. I am disappointed that you have basically called for profiling all Syrians as potential terrorists by making South Carolina an unwelcoming place for Syrian refugees out of fear. While it stands that our priority is to protect the American people first and foremost, it also stands that America is built on a platform of compassion, trust, and common ground. We, as a country that is often referred to as 'The Melting Pot', must make a strong stance for the protection of innocent lives, welcoming them with open (albeit cautious) arms. Branding and treating an entire country's citizens as potential terrorists is both harmful to the millions of Syrians whose image and culture is tarnished for a significant amount of time, leading to hatred and violence against them, regardless of their innocence. It is easy to sit back in our comfortable, air conditioned homes and call to keep the 'others' out. After all, we don't have bombs dropping over our heads every day. Don't they deserve the sense of safety we enjoy here? And as the country that has sent more than five times as many drone strikes as any other country, don't we have a responsibility to help those that live in the country we have helped to destroy? What makes American lives any more valuable than Syrian ones? As an elected Governor, American, and Global citizen, please explain to me how you think about and through this. Thank you for your time, Scotty Leach
