The state needs to raise the gas tax by at least 10 cents per gal. and then link it to inflation. The $300 sales tax cap on vehicles needs to be changed to a 3% sales tax. NO local sales taxes would be permitted on vehicles, just the state sales tax. The sales tax revenue could be divided with 33% to counties and municipalities, 34% to SCDOT and 33% to other infrastructure. NONE of the money would be used for NEW construction, "quality of life enhancements," sidewalks, economic development or similar. Just for maintenance of exisiting roads, bridges and infrastructure. Infrastructure other than roads and bridges should be defined in any legislation as being dams, water and sewer systems and drainage systems. No projects such as the $11,000,000 expansion of the Garrison Arena at Clemson, the Great Outdoors Center at Sanctuary Point, etc. should even be considered, much less funded in any part. This would show that S.C. is willing to do its part in taking care of its own needs. Down the road, the General Assembly needs to totally revamp the income, property and sales tax codes of the state. Far too many exclusions, exemptions, deductions, etc. I am sending a similar message to legislators and U.S. Congressional members. Thank you.
