Haley: Georgia has come up with a very sound and fair patient compensation system to help those hurt in the course of medical treatment. Please study this link carefully. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/840337 Jeff Segal is eminently qualified to bring this to fruition here. We need to borrow from the lessons of Georgia and not try to reinvent the process locally.I understand Florida is also poised to do this soon. We waste so much money, time, sanity of physicians in defensive medicine. Neither patients nor physicians are happy with the outcomes of protracted litigation. Why can't we do the same her in South Carolina. I will volunteer my time to help if needed. I recently witnessed an unnecessary settlement in a case with no merit at all. The poor internist with over 20 years of experience became depressed and stopped seeing hospitalized patients and now practices very defensively, very differently, to the detriment of patient care. One of our radiologists reported reading 150 CT scans in one day, one shift from ED with 99% of them being normal! If we can have a rational system of patient compensation it would certainly curtail defensive medicine. It is high time the government helped us by "decriminalizing the act of medical practice".
