Some Republican senators say they want to
scrap tax proposals approved two weeks ago by the Senate
Finance Committee.
Members of the Republican
Caucus say today the tax proposals are not good for the
state.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh
Leatherman says the tax proposals could have an adverse affect
on the state's already-struggling economy and hurt economic
development.
It's not clear now what plan the
Senate will take up when it begins debating the state's
five-point-two billion dollar budget next
week.
The Finance Committee's plan included tax
increases and the elimination of some tax
breaks.
It proposed raising the sales tax cap on
cars from 300 to 25-hundred dollars and eliminating food tax
exemptions for people 85 and older.
Democratic
Senator John Land, of Manning, says the Republicans took heat
from the automobile industry.
